For phone calls with the personal landline number +41 31 684 xx xx, a Teams client has to be configured. Teams Phone is only available for employees campus accounts. For authentication the @unibe.ch e-mail address is used.
Windows & Mac
On Windows and Mac computers the Teams client is usually preinstalled. If you need to install it, sign in at https://teams.microsoft.com/ and select the desktop app download via menu.
Smartphone
If you agree to use your private smartphone, you can install the Teams app and use this device for calls. Hint: Make sure to configure quiet hours and quiet days to avoid permanent availability.
Linux
Unfortunately, Microsoft has discontinued the Teams client for Linux and the only officially supported client is the so-called Teams Progressive Web App (PWA). Teams runs in the browser, but can be "installed" via the browser menu. As a result, it also appears with its own icon in the start menu and opens in a separate window; automatic start can also be activated. Only Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome are officially supported browsers.
Install Teams Progressive Web App
This guide has been tested with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
- Make sure to install the Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge browser via DEB or RPM packet and not via flatpak or similar tools (leads to missing permissions). You need to use Chrome or Egde here, even if you don’t normally use it. Firefox is now also officially supported for Teams, but is unusable due to the lack of PWA support.
- Open https://teams.microsoft.com/ in Chrome or Edge and authenticate with your @unibe.ch e-mail address
- Click Turn on to enable desktop notifications and select Allow
- Go to Calls / Custom Setup / Device Settings / Make a test call, if requested, allow Teams to use the microphone and camera, end the call
- Go back to Device Settings and select the desired speaker and microphone for calls and optionally also the desired camera (be aware that the default audio device configured in the system settings will play the ring tone for incoming calls)
- Repeat the test call to check the audio devices
- Install the Teams PWA with a click on the icon

(Egde) in the address bar and select Install
Enable automatic start of Teams
- Chrome: Visit chrome://apps, right-click on Microsoft Teams and select Launch at startup
- Edge: Click on the three dot menu and go to Apps / View Apps, right click Microsoft Teams, select Manage app and click Auto-start on device login
Uninstall Teams Progressive Web App
- Chrome: Visit chrome://apps, right-click on Microsoft Teams and select Uninstall
- Edge: Click on the three dot menu and go to Apps / View Apps, right click Microsoft Teams, select Manage app and click on Uninstall
