Frequently Asked Question

How to connect from macOS or Linux?
Last Updated 3 years ago

Tested on Ubuntu 12.04 (LTS), but should work on other systems as well.

  1. From the file explorer or finder go to "File"->"Connect to Server" or a similar command.
  2. Enter the following data in the fields:
image
Server: "titania.unibe.ch"
Type: Select Windows share or SMB
Share: "Space" or "UserHomes"
Folder (if available): "/" (or preferred folder inside the "Space" folder e.g "Projects")
---
Domain name: "CAMPUS" (in capital letters!)
User name:
Password:

Solving Problems

If the connection fails, it probably works when starting again at point (1) or after a reboot.

If the problems persist, try the following: On some (older?) systems you have to specify the username as "campus\username" (with a backslash!) and enter "WORKGROUP" for the domain to connect with titania.

Hints

  • In the sidebar of some systems you'll see the mounted share under "Network"
  • On some systems you can bookmark a share: right click on the share and choose "Add Bookmark". The next time you want to open the share folder, just click on the bookmarked item and enter the password (if not saved already).
  • Moving the mouse over a share may show the path to the share folder- On some systems this path can also be seen in the address bar: Menu->"Go"->"Location..." The path is e.g. "smb://CAMPUS;@titania/space/"

autofs

Advanced Mac and Linux users should have a look at autofs. It automatically mounts network shares on a as-needed basis. This is extremely convenient for notebooks that are not permanently connected to the university network.
